This week at ISS, we had visitors from around the world visit us. This visit was for accreditation for of our IB programmes. Students from S.A.L.T. had lunch with the visitors and discussed their role in taking action at the school.
Student in the leadership team, along with other Grade 5 students are leading assemblies. They are in charge of planning and learning how to be strong presenters. They have compiled a list that will help them when presenting, and have given each other feedback. Ada went to the Food Bank on the weekend to volunteer with her dad's racing team and created a presentation which she shared with all of grade 2. Well done Ada!
Today the G1-2 student council were proud to find that we had made over $800 for the Food Bank! Big thanks to Raymond, Mirei, Tuva and Hina for helping out with the tricky bits! We are looking forward to handing the money over to Mr Nicholas from the Food Bank in our next meeting!
In Kindergarten 1, our Action as Service Project is called Notes of Gratitude. In our 'Who we are' unit of inquiry, we reflected on how the people around us have shaped who we are. Through these inquiries and investigations, we realized that we have a lot to be thankful for. The important people in our lives, including family, friends, and teachers do a lot to make us who we are, including teaching us new things and giving us love and care.
Some of the curriculum connections and desired learning outcomes of this project include:
1) Ikram, Mirai and Steven are inquiring into climate change and pollution. They are collecting E Waste in the school. They have set up a box in the ES office and have made presentations to various classes in an effort to collect E Waste. The E waste will be delivered to Virogreen, a local company.
The group also plan to make a book to educate others. 2) Hina, Hanna and Raymond are inquiring into the effects of Music on learning. For the past week they have been conducting a scientific experiment with controlled variables. Every day, during Math lessons, they have played Music for ten minutes and then recorded student responses. They then record their observations and then write conclusions. This will go on for ten days before they arrive at a conclusion. 3) Koji has designed and created a nail puller using a few simple machines. He is inquiring into technology and machines and how they have made our lives easier. Keagan and Koji have designed and created a motorized car. 4) Tuva, Praveen and Xianhang have collected used plastic bottles for ten days and are planning to create a sculpture of an elephant to draw attention to ivory trade. 5) Raphael, Sangje and Toma have designed and created a drone (futuristic) that can be used to rescue animals in the wild. Grade 5 students are taking action to the community, raising awareness about responsible consumerism that protects animal rights, food choices, the effects of gaming on kids, and cyberbullying. Awesome!
