One of our SALT Team members has a goal to grow a tomato and basil garden so that she can have bruschetta for lunch! A BIG thank you to Grace's mum for donating this lovely soil and some seeds to get us going! If anyone would like to join us to create a garden space, feel free to bring a plant and get digging!
Many thanks to Georgina Tan for letting us know about all the great work that is happening at WWF! I am sure that this will inspire our students as they work towards their Global Goals.
Flushed with the success of our "No Plastic on International Day" campaign, today SALT members chose an action that they are passionate about and linked it to one of the 17 Global Goals for sustainable development. Students chose No Hunger, Life on Land, Life Under Water and Responsible Consumption. Looking forward to seeing how this amazing team turns their ideas into positive action! For more information on the Global Goals click this link, and stay tuned!
A hearty congratulations to all our SALT members for running such a successful campaign to reduce plastic on International Day! A fantastic effort with most students in the school bringing their own container. Well done SALT!!!
We had a recent sports day on last Friday 22nd September. Our SALT team with the support of Ms. Jasinska and Ms. Kate wanted to “be a part of the solution, not the part of the pollution”, so we started a campaign about no littering and bringing your own refillable bottles on the day. Each SALT member announced the news to their classmates and our friends helped us from making this small step to a huge step. So our SALT team would like to thank everyone- all the parents and our classmates including ourselves.
Our campaign went successful mostly. There was very less littering of any garbage or plastic bottles. People tried to avoid littering not only in the stadium but outside too. I saw a parent stopping their child from throwing a plastic bottle on the ground. We saved lots of plastic bottles from being thrown. But yet some people did not follow it. Some students left their food and ran to the other stands, and when they came back they forgot about it. Some people threw the cupcake wrappers under their chairs as you can see the attached picture. So we aim at zero pollution on our next event and wish to continue this activity for our school. Odrita, Arwyn, Grace and Camille took a risk to be the first SALT members to host the assembly this week. They gave up their lunchtime to practice speaking loudly, clearly and expressively, with excellent results. Well done everyone!
After much thinking, sharing, reflecting and revising plans, SALT put their into action this week. SALT members posted "Water Use Tracking" sheets outside all bathrooms so students could tally their water use. The reason for tracking water use is to see how much water students use in a weekly period. Next week, we will reflect together on the effectiveness of the system.
S.A.L.T. has met twice to start out the new semester! We are excited to really focus on the UN SDGs this term. We are learning about the goal: Zero Hunger and making decisions about how we can reduce food waste at ISS. Stay tuned for updates!
Hi! I'm Liem and my co-writer Samir is Right here. We had a visit from Ms. Chloe about the Urgent Run. She told us that 2.5 billion people don't have access to clean sanitation. She then told us that in the Urgent Run, We do a 5 km run, a big squat which is healthy and a dress up event. We learned a lot of things and we are sorry for all of those people! I mean, it's not every day you hear that there is a problem involving more than a THIRD of our population! That's all from us!
On the 23rd of September, We had a visit from Ms. Nichol! She taught us how the food bank works, it's old and current projects and what we donate to them. She talked about how many places and companies send food to the Food Bank When they don't need it or for a silly reason! She told us that Burger king was going to throw away a truckload of onion rings because two costumers were annoyed that their onion rings had onion skins in them! We also were taught how expired foods can be used as fertiliser or food for animals. We all learned a lot and we now donate any food that we don't need to our bank box!
